Prerequisites:

The student must have a general working knowledge of landscape irrigation systems, including system components, layout, and basic operation.

The student must have a basic understanding of plant and soil water relationships, including root depth, soil characteristics, and factors affecting water use.

The student must be able to interpret basic irrigation scheduling inputs, including precipitation rates, run times, seasonal adjustments, and weather-related factors, for the purpose of developing and adjusting irrigation schedules.

Goals:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify and explain the factors that influence irrigation scheduling, including soil characteristics, plant water requirements, evapotranspiration, climate conditions, and site-specific environmental variables.

2. Calculate appropriate irrigation run times and frequencies using precipitation rates, soil infiltration rates, available water capacity, and system efficiency to minimize runoff, evaporation, and water waste.

3. Demonstrate proper use of irrigation controllers and scheduling methods, including cycle-and-soak programming, seasonal adjustments, and compliance with local watering restrictions.

4. Evaluate irrigation system performance and scheduling effectiveness through the use of water audits, catch-can testing, inspection procedures, and system monitoring techniques.

5. Apply water conservation principles and best management practices to develop irrigation schedules that promote efficient water use, protect plant health, and support long-term system sustainability in accordance with Texas irrigation regulations.

Each section will be followed by a quiz.

Students may not repeat this course in the same license renewal period, per 30 TAC 30.28(p)(1).
